Kavalewitz receives Hardy Bourland Award

amykavalewitz01Amy Kavalewitz, coordinator at the Ken Kennedy Institute for Information Technology at Rice, has received the 2008 Hardy M. Bourland Award for Distinguished Service from the George R. Brown School of Engineering.

She was awarded a certificate and $500.

The award, which was established by the school in 2001, annually recognizes a staff member whose performance is consistently outstanding or whose contributions have significantly improved the school of engineering or Rice as a whole.

Moshe Y. Vardi, director of the institute and the Karen Ostrum George Professor in Computational Engineering, and Jan Odegard, executive director of the institute, nominated Kavalewitz.

“She has made herself an invaluable member of the institute, school and Rice, consistently delivering above and beyond expectations,” they said in a letter, which outlined Kavalewitz’s key work in successfully organizing multiple conferences and events.

Last October, Kavalewitz also received a Rice Distinguished Employee Award. That honor is bestowed occasionally by Human Resource to an employee who performs above and beyond for the benefit of the Rice community.
