Nagarajaiah named co-editor of leading academic journal
Satish Nagarajaiah, professor in civil and environmental engineering and professor in mechanical engineering and materials science in the George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice, has been appointed co-editor of the International Journal of Structural Control and Health Monitoring. The journal is a leading publication in structural engineering and materials. It is published by Wiley InterScience.
Nagarajaiah, who joined the Rice faculty in 1999, is also principal investigator in a $1.6 million structural control research program funded by the National Science Foundation to help design a new generation of adaptive, “smart” shock absorbers for buildings and bridges in earthquake-prone areas. His group is conducting the research jointly with scholars at the University at Buffalo, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the University of California, Los Angeles, and California State University, Fresno.
The professor is also the principal investigator of a U.S. Department of Energy project with Fathi Ghorbel, professor of mechanical engineering and material science, to monitor vibrations at ultra-deepwater risers in floating offshore platforms. Nagarajaiah’s recent research on health monitoring of aerospace structures has been funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Texas Institute of Intelligent Bio-Nano Materials and Structures for Aerospace Vehicles.
Nagarajaiah earned his doctorate in structural engineering from the State University of New York, Buffalo, a master of science degree in structural engineering from the Indian Institute of Science and a bachelor of science degree from Bangalore University.
